How the major stock indexes fared Thursday (AP)
NEW YORK – Stocks struggled to a mixed finish Thursday after weak earnings news from 3M and other companies weighed on the market. The market had risen steadily in the opening moments of trading following a surprise drop in first-time claims for unemployment benefits, but traded sideways for much of the rest of the day.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 12.33, or 0.1 percent, to close at 11,113.95.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.33 point, or 0.1 percent, to 1,183.78.
The Nasdaq composite index 4.11, or 0.2 percent, to 2,507.37.
For the week:
The Dow is down 18.61, or 0.2 percent.
The S&P is up 0.66, or 0.06 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 27.98, or 1.1 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 685.90, or 6.6 percent.
The S&P is up 68.64, or 6.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 238.22, or 10.5 percent.
